Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. Open SpendApp and start logging. There's no sign-up and no login.

How do I log a purchase?

Tap Add Expense, type the amount, tap a category and save. Remaining on Home updates straight away.

How do I set a budget?

Settings › Budget. Choose monthly, fortnightly or weekly, and the day it starts (your pay day works well). Pace on Home then tells you whether you're over or under for this point in the period.

Can I see the introduction again?

Settings › Getting Started.

Logging faster

What's the quickest way to log?

Settings › Set Up Quick Add walks you through putting SpendApp on the Action Button or on Back Tap, so a double tap on the back of your iPhone opens straight to a new expense. You can also say “Log an expense in SpendApp” to Siri.

Can SpendApp log my Apple Pay purchases automatically?

Yes, with a free automation in Apple's Shortcuts app. iOS doesn't let apps create automations themselves, so it's a one-time setup you do in Shortcuts. Settings › Apple Pay shows the steps:

  1. In Shortcuts, open Automation and tap +.
  2. Choose Wallet, then Any Card (or the cards you pay with), and Run Immediately.
  3. Add SpendApp's Log Apple Pay Purchase action.
  4. Set Amount to the Shortcut Input's Amount, and Shop to its Merchant.

After each tap-to-pay, SpendApp logs the purchase and shows what's left. A shop SpendApp hasn't seen before waits in To sort on Home; choose its category once and it's filed automatically next time. Physical card swipes, most online payments and direct debits aren't included, and occasionally a payment terminal doesn't tell Wallet about a tap.

How do I add a widget?

Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen or Lock Screen, tap Edit › Add Widget, and choose SpendApp.

Splitting bills

How do I split a bill?

On Add Expense, tap Split with others, add the people, then split equally, by amount or by item. Only your share counts toward your budget; what others owe you shows in Balances.

What if someone else paid?

Choose who paid with Paid by. What you owe them shows in Balances until you mark it paid.

How do I remind someone who owes me?

Open Balances, tap their name, then Remind. SpendApp opens Messages, WhatsApp or Telegram with a friendly message ready, and you press Send. Add your PayID or bank details in Settings › How to Pay You and they're filled in for you. Change the wording in Settings › Reminder Message.

Can I message the whole group at once?

Yes. Send to Group Chat writes one message with what each person owes.

Receipts

How do I scan a receipt?

On Add Expense, tap the camera and photograph the receipt, or choose a photo you already have. SpendApp reads the items, prices and total on your iPhone, and you check them before saving.

Why didn't my receipt read correctly?

Flat, well-lit photos with the whole receipt in view read best. Tap any line on the review screen to fix it. Reading is most accurate on iPhones with Apple Intelligence.

My receipt is in another language.

Tap Translate on the review screen. Apple Translation may ask to download the language the first time.

Your data

Where is my data stored?

Only on your iPhone. SpendApp has no account and no server, so I never see your expenses. The Privacy Policy has the details.

How do I get my data out?

Settings › Export Expenses (CSV) makes a file that opens in Numbers, Excel or Google Sheets. Settings › Export Photos gives you your receipt and product photos as a folder.

Will my data move to a new iPhone?

Yes, if you set up the new iPhone from an iCloud or computer backup, or by transferring directly from your old iPhone. SpendApp doesn't sync between devices yet.

What happens if I delete SpendApp?

Everything it stored is deleted with it, except copies in your iPhone backups. Export a CSV first if you want to keep a copy.

Does SpendApp change my contacts?

Never. It only reads the contacts you link to people you split with, to keep their name, photo and number up to date.

Can I change the currency?

Settings › Currency. New expenses use the new currency; past expenses keep the currency they were made in.
